Photography by Michael Burgess
Born in Canada, Michael grew up as the oldest of two siblings. Early on, he was allowed to use the cold storage room as his darkroom. This is because, ever since he was a child, Michael always had a camera in his hand. He used that cold storage room and learned to develop film by the age of 11. Michael even had several pictures printed in the local newspaper. Upon graduating from high school Michael entered a local college where he majored in print journalism and photography. After just one year, Michael left school to accept a staff phographer position with a local newspaper. "I felt that the school was teaching me traditional methods, which I feel are important, but I wanted to live outside the box", Michael recalls. "If I were to do it again, I might have remained in school, but I figured working full time would teach me a lot faster". However, Michael's irreverence quickly gained him notoriety as his unique style was breathtaking, and easily recognizable as his. His prowess attracted the attention of other publications and before long he was freelancing for a nationally published daily newspaper and a motorsport magazine. In his "spare" time he shot weddings.
Michael became the chief staff photographer of a leading publication. He resigned so he could be free to chase other endeavors. He has been pursued by many major magazines, to be a staff photographer, but Michael has always chosen to remain an independent photographer. His studio is designed to accommodate and endeavor. "I love creating vibrant imagery for a commercial shoot. But I also like spending time with individuals, creating a memorable portrait. I really have no preference. Every shoot is a unique challenge, with unique possibilities."
Although Michael is highly in demand, he is always open to new projects. No job is too big or too small. Call Michael today. You won't regret it.
